HEARTNUT (Juglans cordiformis)

The Japanese walnut is an ornamental tree which grows to a height of 40 ft. and has a spreading habit. Heartnut varieties bear flattened, heart-shaped nuts with a shell that usually cracks open in two halves, allowing for easy extraction of the fine-flavored kernel. Nuts hang in clusters of 10-15 nuts, average 50 to 60 a lb., and 25-30% kernel. Grafted trees bear in 3-4 yrs. and should be planted on a 35' spacing.
